Top tips for eczema in autumn/winter

Many people with eczema find that their skin condition changes with the seasons. Eczema is often worse in the autumn and winter months, when temperature fluctuations – i.e. moving between a centrally heated indoor environment to the cold outdoors – can play havoc with their skin. Here are some tips to help you navigate the transition into the colder months:

  • Try to pre-empt an eczema flare by making sure you keep up a good emollient routine all year round, which will continually repair your skin barrier and prevent dry skin.
  • Try to bring a flare of eczema under control as quickly as possible. Any delay makes a flare more difficult to treat, so make sure you always have a range of topical steroid preparations or other medication prescribed and to hand for immediate use.
  • Make sure your home is not overheated – central heating removes moisture from the air and this can make your skin very dry and itchy. Keeping your home well-ventilated and free from dust, and your bedroom cool (18°C or below), will also help. 
  • If your skin is drier in the colder weather, you may need different types of emollients in the autumn/winter than in the summer (e.g. ointments or humectant creams in autumn/winter). 
  • Clothing-wise, heavy winter coats and jumpers can lead to overheating, and sweat is a trigger for many people with eczema. Layering is your friend – dressing in several thin layers will allow you to easily remove clothing if you get too hot.
  • Clothing made from 100% cotton, bamboo or silk tends to be the most eczema-friendly.
  • Where scarves are concerned, cotton, silk and linen scarves are more likely to be tolerated by your skin, while a less mainstream option like hemp, which is meant to be soft, is an alternative.
